J.A.M Gr8test Hits

This weekend was nothing short of amazing. I did it, my first performance in D.C... in front of a fairly big crowd... and it was great. I didn't use the 'N' word and just continued to think to myself... you got this!!! To say that I'm proud of myself is definitely an understatement. There is definitely something special about being around a bunch of creatives; they definitely push you to be better, do more, and give more. Although the practices were crucial in regard to time management, I truly enjoyed the entire process.  I was also happy that I didn't get sick and my voice held up for 4 shows singing around 8 songs. This experience has me thinking about the next performance, maybe even voice lessons, and getting back in to writing.

Although, I was totally in the moment and enjoyed every bit of it, I was happy that 18 friends/family came out to support your girl and that meant the world to me. Take a look below to see just  to see a snippet of this weekend.

Thanks Kim for getting me into the JAM Fam

Don't worry if you missed it this year, the show will run again in the Spring; and I hear it may be a 90's show. I'll let you all know well in advance so you can come out and support us.

Buying Black Monthly- September Edition

SUPER DOPE!!!

This month of 'Buying Black', was super dope. As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm a huge fan of enamel pins, and many of you also know I'm a huge fan of Hello Kitty. Well ya'll, after just following links on Instagram I was able to find Hello Kitty's cousin, Hello Kiesha and I had to have her. I. Got. My. Entire. Life with this particular pin and had to tell every one close to me of my find. When I tell you I ordered immediately, I did lol. Since Hello Kiesha's arrival, I gave her prime placement on my denim jacket. Be sure to check out The Pin Twins for usual dopeness.

This is sooo me

The next company that I shopped with I also found on Instagram, Instagram be letting you know lol. I saw this t-shirt and it was a direct representation of me, so I had to cop it. I also LOVE the name of Lee Luh's site and she's a fellow blogger as well. Also, her shipping was super quick and the shirt is sooo soft.

Be prepared to see both of the items above in HEAVY rotation because they're just that dope!!! Did you 'buy black' this month, if not you still have a little time left!!!

Eliminating the 'N' Word...

Use JamwithKristin for a discount!!!

I know what you're thinking... 'Kristin, you still use the 'N' word' don't judge me but I'm not speaking of that 'N' word. I'm speaking of the word 'Nervous'. As many of you know, I'm in an upcoming show next week; singing. Yes, singing. Now I know and you know that singing is actually a talent of mine. But 9 times out of 10, I'd let that 'N' word get the best of me. This time around, I told myself that I wasn't going to use it... at all. Words become you, and often times, what you speak is what you project. Sooo many times I've been asked to sing in public and my response is usually 'you know I'm nervous', and that's exactly what I projected... nerves.

I totally BOMBED this Summer at my Family Reunion because of that pesky word. The song I chose to sing, I could pretty much sing backwards but I totally F'D it up... bad. Singers are already SUPER critical of ourselves, so I beat myself up bad. Afterwards, I prayed for God to allow me to use ALL of the talents that He's given me boldly and fearlessly. It seemed like right after that prayer, an old co-worker/friend reached out with this particular opportunity.

*Side Note- this is exactly why you have to be careful what you pray for and ready to receive just that.*

Honestly, I'm not sure where this overwhelming sense of 'N' word actually came from. I've song countless times in church, in high school/college, and in several weddings. I actually did the Sweet Auburn festival (twice) in Atlanta. I know that I have issues with being put on the spot to sing but that's primarily it.

I end this post by saying... whatever talent that's bestowed upon you, it's given to you for a reason; to share with the world and not to keep to yourself. It's okay to feel the initial vibrations of the 'N' word, but its not okay for it to rob and take over your greatness. Lastly, remember to speak life to every situation as well as words of encouragement over yourself; for you are what you say you are.

Influenster- Oasis Voxbox

Super excited when I received the Oasis Voxbox in July latepost,  this was the perfect Summer box. I mean this box contained everything, something to make you look, smell, and feel good.

Here's what I got in my Oasis Box...
Evolution Fresh Coupon
Eva NYC Mane 10-in-1 Primer
Vera Wang Embrace Fragrance
Aloha Protein Bar in Peanut Butter & Jelly
CoverGirl Vitalist Healthy Elixer Foundation in #765 Tawny

This drink was right on time for my walk

I can't really say my favorite thing because they all are. I will say that the foundation really surprised me. I hadn't used CoverGirl foundation since high school, yep you read that right. Aside from the makeup the juice was the BOMB!!! The workout bar was something that I could not get into at all, it was like an instant stomach ache. If you all received the Oasis Voxbox, which item was your favorite?

Buying Black Monthly- August Edition

I decided to add a segment which highlights a few black owned brands that I've purchased from. This month I found sooo many things that I wanted to buy from my melaninated brothers and sisters... but, the way that my bank account is set up lol.

The first company that I shopped with is Coloring Pins. I was introduced to Coloring Pins when I attended the 2nd Anniversary of Ujamaa Box back in November. I briefly met the owner when I asked about a melanin pin that she had on. Although this is my first purchase from Coloring Pins, it definitely won't be my last; I actually have my eye on this and this. However, when they announced that they would be collaborating with By Ms James for the Story of OJ, I knew I had to turn on my notifications to make sure that I didn't miss out. Now I'm not much of a 'patch girl' but I just LOVE the 'black panther' vibe of this patch as well as the meaning. The front of my denim jacket has pins and I was thinking of putting the patch on the back, but once its there... its there. If you can think of any other cute ways to style patches let me know.

The next business I shopped at was Cute as a Button. Now I knew Tiffany because she's a fellow graduate of my Alma Mata, Albany State University. I remember Tiffany's business was exclusive to button earrings but since then she's began to take on the custom apparel market. When I saw that she'd created a 'Reclaiming My Time' t-shirt, I knew I had to have one customized in pink and green; you already know. The shipping was fast and the shirt ended up being a perfect fit. If you are looking to have customized shirts made for any occasion, please reach out to her as she does an amazing job.

Sooo this kicks off August edition and my pockets are burning for September's edition as sooo many things are already on the radar. Let me know if you'll be 'buying black' this month and if so, what are some dope businesses to check out?

Yelp's Paint Party at Pinots' Palette

Last night I had a chance to hang with my Elite Yelp family at Pinot's Palette in Merrifield, Va. I was super happy when I was notified that I was on the 'in list' because it has been a while since I've attended a Yelp event.

I've only attended one paint class in the past so I had a pretty good idea of what was in store for the night. However, this class exceeded my expectations, the studio was very bright and inviting,  my type of place. Upon arrival, my I.D was checked and I was given two drink tickets yes two, and an apron t protect my clothing. After I was checked into the event by a Yelp staffer, I made my way to the food. Us Yelpers LOVE our food and over stand the notion, food first, then pleasantries!!! The food was provided by Blackfinn Ameripub and the spread consisted of Pretzels & Cheese, Cheese Fries, Shrimp, and Tuna. I grabbed a bite to eat and headed to the bar for my libation. I was super stoked when I saw they had Rose' since that's my FAV summer drink. Luckily for me I was able to snag the last pour!!!

This way Rose'

As I headed to my seat I was able to see the picture we'd be painting for the night which was super cute. In all honesty, I don't attend a lot of painting classes because I'm not interested in painting horses, cats, or horizons lol. I'd much rather paint something that I can hang which represents me than paint something that I'll send to the Goodwill Boutique.

Throughout the class I really enjoyed the fact that the Pinot's Palette team was very motivated. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing because of their willingness to help us create our individual vision coupled with theirs. They were also able to share a few interesting facts (where the company started, how many classes they've taught overall) and had trivia intermissions throughout; shoutout to team one for winning lol!!!

During the class I didn't know if my painting measured up because I changed my colors and was a bit behind task; but in the end, what I had was a masterpiece perfect for me. If you're interested in Pinot's Palette, be sure to check Yelp for the nearest location, you're definitely in for a treat or two.

We were gifted this cute glass

I LOVED this pic!!!

Daydream Family Wellness & Nails by M&M

Earlier this week I had the chance to be pampered and try and Express manicure by Myshia. Myshia has been in the nail game for a minute and decided to step out on faith and start her own business.  Myshia says her business caters to her clients by allowing them to make appointments directly to her for time she that fit their needs. She definitely catered to my need when I was almost 45 minutes late arriving due to the insane DMV traffic and Apple's glitchy maps.

As soon as I arrived Myshia showed me around the facilities and her suite. It was intimate but definitely served the purpose, because sometimes nail salons can be totally overwhelming. I also liked the fact that Myshia uses Londontown products which improves nail quality and manicure length with every application.

I let Myshia choose my color

My nails started out pretty basic as I'm not a huge fan of nail polish, but the after is nothing short of amazing. Myshia did her thing!!! And since it was an Express Manicure it didn't take all did but still yielded spectacular results.

She chose pink of course
If you're in the Silver Spring area on Sunday be sure to check out Myshia's grand opening!!!

Summer Fun At Joe's Place...

Last week I had a chance to hang out with my blogger boo's at Joe's Place for a Summer Fashion Event. I was super excited when I received the invite and knew I had to break out of my layoff workout clothes and get cute!!!

When I arrived at Joe's I was happy to see that there was parking available, in the DMV, parking is a scarcity. Upon entering I could tell that this was a restaurant that valued family, this was evident in the many families dining as well as the service they showed towards us. The appetizers were hot and the wine was flowing.

Did I mention Lemoncello Boutique were serving looks all night with their fashion? All of the clothes and accessories featured were beautiful. There were a few items for sale at the event but I will definitely be visiting the boutique soon and so should you!!!

This event had something for everyone; there was also a few muscle cars in the lot, we definitely took advantage of the photo opps.

Issa cutie and a Vette!!!

Huge thanks to Joe's Place for hosting us as well as Lemoncello for the swag bag!!!

18... with 17 Years of Experience...

Rose All Day

I had no idea that this is how it would feel to be 35... but I am grateful!!! There are sooo many people that weren't fortunate to see this age and that alone has me humbled. I didn't have many plans in mind and the lay-off crushed the few I had. Nonetheless, I wasn't going to spend this day doing absolutely nothing so I arranged a happy hour and treated myself to macaroons and bubble tea.

Bestie...

Shout out to all my friends for showering me with cards and gifts and making my day special!!!

3rd Times A Charm...

Accessories In My First Office

Just as quickly as it began... it was all over. No more office, no more cell-phone stipend, no more 'when work is travel'. I was now unemployed...

If you've been following my blog for a while you know that this is the second time in less than a year that I've encountered a layoff. Let's just say... it get's easier. Now don't get me wrong, no one enjoys getting or being laid off; but after a time or two you know exactly what to do. You gain this newfound confidence and I-won't-be- defeated mentality. Another caveat of this layoff is the fact that we knew ahead of time. Anytime someone says plan on contingencies, you better dust off that resume and begin interview prepping with a friend. Actually from the time I was told to make contingencies until the actual notification that my job would be eliminated, I'd already secured two face-to-face interviews.

My outlook on this layoff is that I'd like to have employment before the end of July and just chill for the month of June. Nonetheless positivity and good vibes are welcomed!!!

When Work Is Travel- College Park, Md.

Last week I traveled to College Park, MD to complete a training class. I should mention, the word ‘travel’ is used lightly here although it was an hour and a half commute each way. On a good day, College Park is roughly 35-40 minutes away, so it isn’t the first place that I travel to for ‘good eats’. However, since this training was coming up, I mapped out almost every place I wanted to eat and an honorable mention that I wasn’t able to try. When I say I ate horrible out for lunch every day, it was every single day, no Bueno for my waistline. Take a look below and get into my foodie adventure.

Monday: Blaze Pizza
You may remember me mentioning Blaze last year when I was mystery shopper. It’s been almost a year since I had that delicious pizza. I was happy to be only 5 minutes away and I knew that it wouldn’t disappoint. I was a bit wrong, not totally disappointed but semi. On that particular day, they didn’t have any chicken… how sway. Usually I HATE chicken on a pizza because it tends to be overly dry, but not Blazes’ chicken. Although I wasn’t able to add chicken, I was able to get their tasty Blood Orange Lemonade. That lemonade definitely comes in second place to Chik Fil A’s which is usually hit or miss.

I LOVE Arugula

Tuesday: Unforgettable Flavors
It is very, very hard to find good Jamaica food in VA. Of course I had to put this on my list. At the time we ordered, we were the only people inside so we were able to meet the chef prior to eating. Usually my go to at almost any Jamaican restaurant is Ox Tails, and that day was no different. If you know me well you know my order: Ox Tails, Rice & Peas, and Plantains. The oxtails were good but it wasn’t as meaty as they could have been. I also tasted my friends Jerk Chicken and it tasted a bit too sweet and lacked that kick of spice that I’m use to. Since the restaurant makes their own ginger drink and I LOVE anything ginger I had to get that. This particular ginger drink tastes exactly like the drink I get at the African Restaurants.

Ye 'Mon

Wednesday: Milk & Honey

This spot has been on my radar for some time and I thought I’d make it over for brunch one weekend although I hear the wait time is ridic. Luckily for me, they were less than 5 minutes away from the hotel. My friend ordered the Strawberry Shortcake for us to share and it was pretty tasty. I opted for the $10 special in an attempt to save some coins. The special was Cajun Shrimp and Chicken Pasta, which I later found out was pick one or the other *eye roll*. This was very flavorful, but I needed it to have a bit more of a kick to it. Sidenote- when I think Cajun, I think of a spicy heavy cream based dish and this was lemon olive oil based. My friend got the Grilled Salmon BLT which came on a croissant, and of course I regretted my order. Everyone’s food around me looked really tasty but I’m not sure I could go on an empty stomach and have to wait #JustSayn. For those of you that plan on visiting because it is ‘the spot’ at the moment; they also have a ‘wait dish’ that you can order to curb your hunger. We asked what it was for the day but because there wasn’t a wait, nothing was prepared. As I was about to head out, I noticed cupcakes and of course I had to grab one. The employees recommended the snicker doodle cupcake and it was delish!!!

I wish I would have ordered this...

Thursday: Fishnet
I actually tried this spot back in 2013, because President Obama visited, literally, that was the only reason. I ordered the fried catfish sandwich and the slaw. My catfish was good, but needed a bit more seasoning. The slaw was horrible, it was vinegar based but had cilantro added and I HATE cilantro can you tell I’m a critic . Unfortunately, I was starving that day and forgot to take a picture. My friend ordered catfish as well so I quickly snapped hers before she bit into it. During this lunch is when I checked yelp and saw that there was a new and hot restaurant in the area so we decided to visit as our last hooray.

Sooo good

Friday: Gus’s Fried Chicken
As if I couldn’t get any unhealthier lol. I thought the chicken would have some type of wet spicy batter but it didn’t. I’m not a person that can take extreme heat but this wasn’t even spicy at all. I got the two piece with a wing and breast with a jalapeno on the side, and I had okra and baked beans. The baked beans were really good and the okra was bomb. I can eat fried okra anytime of the day if only there was a Church’s Chicken around yes I’m that type of country lol. The chicken was always served with white bread, my friend asked for wheat bread and I thought that was hilarious. I liked the Nashville decor with all of the blues memorabilia.

My honorable mention goes to: Milkbar Arthouse
I thought for sure we’d end the training with Happy Hour here but unfortunately that didn’t happen. The vibe looks really cool not sure when I’ll be back in the ae to check it out though.

As you can see I gained about 20 pounds, just kidding. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch adventures in College Park, Md. Are there any places that wasn’t on my list that I need to travel and try?
